What would it look like to host a true community cafe?
A sign that says:
We invite this to be your space! Your home away from home, your communal living room. We, the “owners” are the caretakers of this space: we are hosting it and managing it for you. Because of the economic system we live in, we require US dollars to maintain and keep hold of this space. This is why we sell things, and why we encourage you to buy things here or if you don’t want anything on a given day, consider making a donation to support the continuation of this space as a resource to our community. We do not require payment to be here, but our society does require that we pay to retain this space. Bear this in mind :) Without your help, this place cannot exist! (until property ownership is abolished)
If we don’t raise enough money from the community, from you, our members, then we will close and will no longer be a resource for our community. Consider that, when you spend time here, and consider what value we provide and how you might respond with money as an investment in this space. We wish it were otherwise :)
We are transparent about profits and investments in the upkeep of this space and invite your input and participation! Please consider that critique without suggestions puts the burden on someone else who may also be overworked to solve the challenge. Consider putting forward constructive proposals whenever you are able. And please do not hesitate to contact us if something needs addressing urgently. We are here for you, as we hope you will be here for us too!
We are aiming to be the stewards of this small sheltered piece of land for now. As sure as night will fall and day will break again, this small establishment will change hands in the future. For now, we enjoy it together with you today! We are happy you are here and enjoying this space.
